Don't forget pbwiki!

I, Sue Connolly, have been working on a PBwiki site this summer (2008) for my team of 6th grade teachers at Barre City to use.  It is also for me to practice using a wiki of my own so that I could better use it with my students.  The more I do, the more I like.  I thought you might like to see this wiki and how we are using it so far.  Many of my colleagues are away for the summer and not on next year yet so to date there is not a whole lot of collaboration but I have put things up for everyone and great links to my files, other pages, etc.  Also, a short while after I signed up for this wiki, I received an email about a wiki summer camp put on by the pbwiki folks which would show me more how to use this 2.0 tool in my classroom and a promise of a premium site at the finish of class.  I couldn't resist it and am now involved in it and learning a lot.

Go here to get a free site- http://www.backtoschoolchallenge.com/

I will also quote the email I received from pbwiki to get a free site for educators.  (Make sure you check the educators box when signing up for  your wiki.)

"Give your colleagues a free gold wiki - You are the first to be invited to the PBwiki Back to School Challenge. Invite your friends and colleagues to sign up to earn a free gold wiki plus classroom resources like books, legos and more.

Send your friends here:  http://www.backtoschoolchallenge.com/ "

I should statet that today is August 14th.  This may not work for long.

Go here to see the wiki that was created by Sue Connolly and Stephanie McMahan about Podcasts.  This will be piloted in our school this year.  It will be introduced as a choice for students who want to have their book reviews placed on the online school library catalog.

21 Classes   This looks promising--no email required. Needs closer look though!

Also note the information about COPPA concerns and how we probably should not do WEB 2.0 with students under age 13 unless there are some legal clarifications...

I have been trying to get something started for 6th grade where students can communicate online about books, etc. I looked at a lot of these sites. 21 classes does require an email address to leave replies. I don't want to set up email for my students. Unless there is something I have missed. I would really love a way to have my students converse without email or ads but am stuck. I just can't find a way to do it.

Well folks, I got working on this blog deal again and I found out how to use 21Classes without needing an email address. The students do need a password and a user name but not an email. In that case I think this site is ideal and I'll be getting it ready for use in my classes soon. I'll let you know when to look for it.

Your colleagues are working on a summer online project for Barre City using 21classes. See the page entitled Barre City Summer Reading for more details.
